Crosby Leads Canada Over U.S. In OT
Sidney Crosby scored in overtime to give Team Canada a victory in the gold medal game over the United States on Sunday afternoon.
Zach Parise scored with 24.4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but the United States couldn't complete their upset in the extra period.
"Our team worked so unbelievably hard," Crosby said. "Today was really tough, especially when they got a goal late in regulation. But we came back and got it in overtime."
Rangers Send Wiikman To ECHL Charlotte
Rangers President and GM Glen Sather announced today that goaltender Miika Wiikman has been assigned to the Charlotte Checkers of the ECHL.
Wiikman returns to Charlotte where he has posted a record of 9-2-1-2, along with a 2.77 goals against average, a .909 save percentage and one shutout in 16 games this season. He leads the Checkers in goals against average, is tied for first on the team in save percentage and shutouts, and ranks second in wins.
Leafs Recall Hanson, Stalberg From Marlies
Brian Burke, president and GM of the Maple Leafs, announced Saturday that forwards Christian Hanson and Viktor Stalberg have been recalled from the Marlies of the AHL.
Hanson has appeared in 10 games with the Maple Leafs this season, recording one assist and eight penalty minutes. In 37 games with the Marlies, he has 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists), a plus three (+3) rating and 33 penalty minutes.
Stalberg has registered two goals and an assist with six penalty minutes in 19 games with the Leafs so far in 2009-10. He has also collected 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points, with a team-high plus five (+5) rating and 36 penalty minutes in 38 games with the Marlies this season.
Phoenix Sends Eriksson, Perrault, Maclean To San Antonio
Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-assigned defenseman Anders Eriksson and forward Joel Perrault to their AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, for conditioning assignments.
In addition, forward Brett MacLean has been re-assigned to San Antonio.
U.S. Romps Finland To Reach Gold-Medal Game
The Americans scored six times on Finland goalie Miikka Kiprusoff in the first period, surging into the Olympic gold-medal game with a 6-1 rout of Finland on Friday.
"We haven't won anything yet," forward Zach Parise said. "We're getting better and that'd the most important and rewarding thing."
The U.S. will meet the Canada-Slovakia winner on Sunday.
Rangers Send Johnson To Hartford, Recall Wiikman
Rangers President and GM Glen Sather announced today that goaltender Chad Johnson has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, and goaltender Miika Wiikman has been recalled from Hartford.
Johnson has appeared in five games with the Rangers this season, posting a 1-2-1 record, along with a 2.35 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. He notched his first career NHL win, while starting in consecutive games for the first time in his career, with a 34-save effort in a 3-1 win at Colorado on January 31.
Wiikman has appeared in seven games with Hartford this season, posting a 2-4-0 record with a 4.20 goals against average and an .869 save percentage this season. He posted back-to-back wins on October 24 vs. Lowell (5-2) and October 25 vs. Worcester (4-3), registering a 2.50 goals against average and stopping 66-of-71 shots for a .930 save percentage over the span.
Coyotes Send Gistedt To Las Vegas
Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have re-assigned goaltender Joel Gistedt to their ECHL affiliate, the Las Vegas Wranglers.
Gistedt has appeared in 10 games with Las Vegas this season, posting a record of 2-5-1 with a 4.64 goals against average and a .862 save percentage.
Ducks Recall Four Players From AHL, ECHL
The Ducks announced today that the club has recalled defensemen Brett Festerling and Brendan Mikkelson from the Marlies of the AHL, right wing Dan Sexton from Manitoba (AHL) and goaltender Timo Pielmeier from Bakersfield (ECHL).
Festerling has appeared in 30 games for the Ducks this season, earning 0-3=3 points with six penalty minutes.
Mikkelson has appeared in 22 contests for Anaheim in 2009-10, recording 0-2=2 points with eight PIM.
Sexton has appeared in 28 games for the Ducks this season, collecting 9-9=18 points with 14 PIM.
Pielmeier has played in 42 games for Bakersfield in his rookie season, posting a 20-16-5 record with a 3.09 goals-against average and .886 save percentage.
Americans Slip Past Swiss
Zach Parise scored a pair of goals as the United States defeated Switzerland 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Parise scored a power-play goal to break a scoreless tie early in the third period and added an empty-net goal in the victory.
The Americans next play the winner of Wednesday's Finland-Czech Republic game.
Lightning Recall Janus From Norfolk
The Lightning have recalled goaltender Jaroslav Janus from the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL today, Executive Vice President and GM Brian Lawton announced. Janus will practice with the Lightning while Antero Niittymaki participates in the Vancouver Olympics.
Janus has played in 12 games with Norfolk this season, posting a 6-6-0 record, a 2.09 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage with one shutout. He leads all Admirals goaltenders in goals-against average and save percentage. Janus made his professional debut with Norfolk on October 14 at Albany, stopping 27 of 29 shots.
